I got a couple of watches at a thrift store and would appreciate your opinion of them. I am trying to learn about vintage watches and figured that this is a good way to start, so let's see how I did: First up is this Bulova Accutron Astronaut. Am I right in thinking that this model is in demand as far as Accutrons go, even if it's not running? The hands move freely when I try to adjust them, but I don't know if it works or not - after reading up on Accutrons online, I am afraid to try and put a battery in it, or even take the back of the case off, for that matter. Is it really that risky to put one in myself?
The crystal is cracked and badly scratched but the rest of it seems to be in fairly good condition with no pitting or corrosion that I can see (although it is very dirty). The band says Seiko so obviously it's not original. Was it worth buying? |

Tap the side of the case and see of the hand moves. If they do, it's not hopeless to get it running. |

I did that, and nothing much happened - but I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for when I tap the side of the case. Do I just tap it once, or will it take a couple of taps? And by move, do you mean see if any of them jiggle a little bit? Or are they supposed to move ahead like advancing a second or a minute or something like that? They do move fine when I twist the little pop-out handle on the back. |

tap it repeatedly gently on the side of the case and see if the sweep second moves. As long as you tap the sweep should continue to move. |
