I would be very grateful for any information regarding an 18k gold quite heavy Omega wind-up watch, in perfect working condition. The wide gold strap appears to be original and 18k gold as well. It is also marked twice with the Omega sign on the clasp. On the back of the watch it says: "Omega watch co." in a triangle, then "fab suisse, swiss made", then "18k 0.750", followed by the number 30078. Please could you give me any information about it, eg. how old it is and what it might be worth? Thank you very much!

Unfortunately, you're describing a fake watch. It is neither an Omega product nor is it 18K gold as stamped on the back. Rather, you'll find that it is gold-tone plated brass. I see these often.

How do I know? These are common fakes with a very obvious "tell": Omega has NEVER used the triangle symbol on the back of any of their watches. This triangle symbol is always on the inside of the case on a genuine Omega product.

Here are a few examples of fake 18K Omegas, showing the fake 18K markings on the back. One probably looks similar to yours:

Genuine Omegas have the triangle emblem on the INSIDE of the case, like this:

Oh... but it's an old, wind-up watch.. I know there are a lot of fake modern battery operated watches, but do they really make fake 17 jewel movement wind-up watches? That's why I thought it might be genuine..? Thank you very much for your help!

They generally don't make fake vintage watches now (with exceptions) but you are forgetting that your fake watch was probably made at the same time as genuine "wind-up" Omega watches were being made & sold. In other words, you have an old "vintage" fake watch. Fake products are not a new idea you know.

Be aware, however, that there are still vintage "fakers" out there concocting a variety of "collectible" fake vintage watches. If the return in dollars is enough to justify the effort the fakers will be there also.

Every one of the fakes shown in the pictures above is a "wind-up" mechanical watch. I could probably show pictures of 50 more different styles of vintage mechanical fake "18K" Omegas, but it would burn lots of Zaf's space for images and download slow.

As Jim mentioned, fakes have been made for decades. The common thread in this particular group of fakes is that they put the triangle Omega markings in the wrong place (on the back), making them easy to spot. This emblem will NEVER be found on the outside back of a genuine Omega watch.

OK! I will definitely try and learn not to be taken in any more by fake vintage watches..! I really thought only the modern ones could be fake! Thanks so much to both of you for your advice!
