The watch alone is arounf $800, the box a papers will probably add another $200.

You didn't tell Zaf anything about the condition... the most important thing when buying a watch. Mint NOS. The copied picture of my watch looks horrible.

Hi. One sale is not necessarily a good indicator of the value of a piece. I was just offered one this week for $900 which I turned down. 1600 for a two diamond dial mystery is the highest price I have ever seen, and for that congratulations, you made out like a bandit.

The watch that "Richie" asked about in the original post on this thread was my auction. I was the seller RP13245. The watch was absolutely pristine/NOS and had the original box, papers & LeCoultre strap/buckle. The original strap didn't even have a bend in the leather. Not a single blemish on the original factory dial and the unbuffed original factory mirror finish on the case was perfect. The watch ended up fetching $2,295. Clearly, this amount is many times the normal market price for this model, but condition is everything to a collector and this watch was in extremely rare NOS condition. If the condition is right, all pricing rules go out the window.

These 2-diamond Mystery dials normally go for $800-$1,200 at auction. The prices on all LeCoultre Mystery Dial models have been climbing in the last couple of years, but a price over $1,200 would be unusual unless the watch was truly in exceptional condition.

Greg

P.S. On a sad note, the (non-collector) buyer of my NOS Mystery Dial watch put it into daily wear. I could never bring myself to strap it on.

You also have to consider inflation since January 2004. The rising costs of fuel and COLI (cost of living index) make vintage watches more valuable as an investment.

Respectfully, COLI has very little to do with the rise in watch prices over the short 1 year period from 2004 to 2005. In fact, the U.S. Dept. of Labor Statistics calculator (http://www.bls.gov/cpi/home.htm) shows an increase of only 4% from 2004 to 2005. On a more global scale, the COL Index for most major cities worldwide (http://www.finfacts.com/costofliving3.htm) rose only a few percentage points from 2004-2005.

Clearly, the average price of these watches didn't jump 322% from $900 to 1600 (about $2,900) because of a 4% COLI. Condition and market demand have far greater impact on price than inflation.
