I recently broke my wrist watch, and feeling lost with out a time piece (and hate using my cell phone to check the time) I decided to wind up and carry my grandfathers pocket watch. It has been in a little display piece ever since I was a kid. I remember him saying he got it for graduation. Out of curiousness I popped open the back and saw the engraving from his parents (May 1941) and then opened the inner lid to to see what model it was and what made up a watch... OMG was I amazed at the craftsmanship!! It was absolutely beautiful. It overwhelmed my mechanical fascination. I did some research on line discovering it was a 904 with 21 jewels and manufactured around 1937. It is white gold with matching chain and little knife. I have been carrying it since and so far it has kept perfect time. My wife thinks I am crazy for carrying it and wants me to put it away, but I cannot So I am asking those who know more about vintage watches than me, should I put it up? Am I risking breakage by using a 75 year old watch daily? I have absolutely fallen in love with this watch. I told her I may consider putting it up (since it was my grandfathers)and possibly buying another vintage wind up watch (perhaps a wrist watch) Thoughts/Advice?

If you feel like it, why not? Watches of this sort are still very repairable if it comes to that. Just keep it away from moisture. |
