Hi,

I recently purchased two Hamilton watches and would like to know a little more about them:

1) An electronic Hamilton Phoenix watch that was new, old stock at a jewelry store. The watch has day and date, and still has the original sticker on the back. It reads: "14k electroplate SSB Day Date." A tag in the watch reads "self wind" and quick change." A few questions: a) When is this watch from? Was this made after the "real" hamilton went out of business? b) What do the terms electroplate and SSB mean? c) I was told (after I bought it!) that these were terribly unreliable watches. Is this true? Can the watch be fixed easily? The watch runs for only a little while after I shake it. Will any local watch repair be able to fix it? d) What's it worth?

2) A Hamilton Automatic Fontainebleau Swiss, with date. Any info on this one would be interesting to me.

Lots of questions... but your info is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Pratip,
Your question is a bit confusing since you say the watch is a Hamilton "electronic" and then mention the tag reads "self wind". A self-winding watch has an automatic mechanical movement as opposed to an electronic movement. That being an open point, here are my best shots at your questions:
a). I am sure the watch dates to the 1970s or so and would post date Hamilton's final year of 1969.
b) Eletroplate is a method used in plating a piece of metal with a very thin layer of gold. Electro plate is much, much thinner than either gold-filled or gold-plated and subject to wear thorugh very quickly. SSB would probably indicate that the case back was made of stainless steel (stainless steel back).
c) Hamilton made the world's first electric wrist watch in 1957. These watches were totally new from a technology standpoint and proved to be somewhat unreliable. They remain very collectible due to the uniqueness and bold styling. Electronic watches became very common in the late 1960's and 1970's and were much more reliable.
If you are shaking the watch and its running for a time, I would suspect you have an automatic watch rather than an electronic one. Try to wind the watch and see if it runs. If it is automatic, any qualified watchmaker should be able to bring it up to good working condition.

2. The Fontainebleau series of Hamilton watches have some collector appeal. They date to the late 1960's. I do not have an addtional information related to them.

Don,

First off thanks for your response... Very informative and interesting!

I'm afraid I wasn't too clear about the watch's movement. A tag in the box says self-wind, but the dial of the watch says "electronic." I suspect the store didn't give me the original box. I just shook the watch again and that revived it for about 15 seconds... Turning the crown does nothing, however.

So, how does an electronic movement work? Does it require a battery? Will any qualified watchmaker be able to repair an electronic also?

Okay, I have one more question, and then I'll leave you alone :). The hour and minute hands on my Fontainebleau are stainless steel colored, and under certain light conditions appear oxidized (or discolored). Where would I find replacements for these hands? Or can they just be polished up?

Thanks again, Pratip

I am totally new to collecting watches. I have a men's Hamilton Masterpiece wrist watch that I am guessing was made from 1950 to 1965. I need to get it opened so I can find the identifying numbers. How does one get into the mechanism? From the front or back. Does it pry open?

I would appreciate any help. thank you,

Those are frequently one piece cases. The crystal needs to be removed and you'd hang the dial, hands and movement out to get to it. If you've never done this before don't try, you can easily break the winding stem.

How do I idenify a model number on this Hamilton Watch. Does it apply to other watches as well? There are so many numbers I am confused as to which is which. What is the difference between adjustabe and unadjustable?
OK here's my pics. I love the bezelled face. Pictures do not capture. There are no diamonds. All 14K Inside case markings tipical Hamilton, L&W #858565, 76625. 22 jewel USA 761 Hamilton Pic is good to see what I might have missed. Your opinion, info and replace value appreciated.<br> I know it is not the high end Hamiltions but this is nice. <p><p>Vintage Ladies Wrist WachHamilton Vintage Workings<p> I have more pics if need be.

You'd need to match it up to old Hamilton
catalogs to find the exact model. It's doable,
but would take a fair amount of research. Rene
Rondeau sells a book that has a lot of the models
listed. You could buy that.

This sort of thing is typically easy to get and
not that expensive, at the very most $200.

Check www.watch-prices.com the free sample is Hamilton and see if you don't see the same model in there. If you do, I believe it can be replaced.

Hello all,
I've just acquired an antique Hamilton watch and can't seem to figure out what it is. It was given to my wife's grandfather as an engagement present in 1941 and has been in his possession ever since. He thought that it is white gold but upon inspection, I located a platinum jeweler's stamp - "900 Plat 100 Irid". Nice surprise! The face has diamonds on each of the number markers and the hands are silver in color. I've not opened the watch up so I can't give you a movement number.

I've looked and looked but I can't seem to find a match for what this model is. I've found a number of watches that look similar to it but two attributes keeps tripping me up: The brscelet and the deco crystal. The crystal isn't domed or arced like the other Hamilton watches that I've found, it is made up of three flat surfaces (see side shots), and the bracelet seems unusual. The watch is 40mm lug-to-lug and ~22mm side-to-side.

Any help on identifying this watch would be greatly appreciated.

Most platinum cased Hamiltons are "contract cases"
that is their case was made by a third party.
They will not have a model name. Check here for more like it:

I don't have any info outside my database. You can try googling Rene Rondeau. He's the Hamilton Guru.

I have a Hamilton pocket watch. On the stem it says Hamilton Railroad. Inside the back bezel its marked Wadsworth 10K Gold filled PAT.5-22-26
and H213906. The model no. is 992. Is there a market for this watch and how would i sell it?
