My great Grandfather was one of the architects on the third leg of the Panama Canal. I just inherited his Hamilton Pocket Watch that was presented to him by his co-workers on the canal, March 1942. I popped the back off and it reads Hamilton 917 17 jewels adjusted 3 positions X92811. What year was this watch made? Am I correct to say 1899? Going by the serial number on the movement? Or inside the back it says HAMILTON WATCH CO KEYSTONE JBOSS 14kt Gold filled 1315341 LANCASTER, PA?

The grade 917 was made from 1936 to 1954, so it's likely to be a circa 1942 watch. |

The movement dates from 1941 or 1942 as per serial number lists I have seen. This seems to be consistent with the engraving. The serial number is listed as belonging to a 917 movement, so this is correct as well. Hope this helps, gatorcpa |
