I would like to identify, date and possibly put a value on my old Hamilton with a 14 K gold filled case in perfect working condition, with a smooth back and semi fancy lugs at the band attatchment that was handed down from my stepfather.

I'm not all that good with Hamilton, but it looks like a Milton model maybe, check www.watch-prices.com, the free sample covers Hamilton.

Since I found the nerve to take it apart. It says 982 model Serial J536988...1949 according to a Hamilton site listed here. Wadsworth on the movement and as you said Milton on the case with it's own serial of J149738

It's Hamilton's Milton model, first available in 1948. It is fairly common on Ebay.
