Hello experts! It is difficult for me to write down my problem in english. But i will try my best. Since some weeks i own a Hamilton model 22 deck watch. I already have cleaned it. The only thing that is left to do, is changing the click spring that looks replaced by a non original one. But there is another problem with the up/down indication where i can not find a solution. If i set the indicator hand on up after winding the watch to maximum and let the watch run for a day, the hand stops between up and 8 when i wind it again. After the next day winding it stops at 8. Next day between 8 and 16, and so on. What could cause this problem? The only idea i have is, maybe the ratchet wheel was replaced by a non original wheel, and the transmission between this and the planetary gear is maybe wrong. Does someone know this problem or has another idea? Thank you from germany Holger

Hi Holger, I asked my watchmaker and he said this: Hi Zaf, Sounds like he is working on this watch himself and has some degree of skill. I think it is unlikely any parts are wrong--what could you use that would fit other than the correct ones in this case? Possible cause: 1. Maybe indicator hand is loose 2. Maybe watch is stoping after different lengths of time Possible solution, I would: 1. Unwind watch 2. Remove Balance and fork 3. Install indicator hand at wound down mark, making sure it is tight on its arbor 4. Wind the watch to see if all operates correctly. 5. If indicator operates correctly and time train runs down smoothly, replace fork and balance 6. If not, isolate problem--dirt, bad part(s), not assembled correctly... 7. It is possible that indicator gear could lift up and disengage from other gear under dial--could need a dial washer or dial is not down all the way (not likely) Whitney book has excellent diagrams of the watch starting on p. 615. ----- |

Thank you Zaf. I have the repair manual for model 22 here, and have checked all. But everything looks to be OK, intact and original (except the click spring). Today i have made another test.I have removed all parts behind the barrel, that only the parts under the barrel bridge are left. If i wind up now, the indicator hand should "not" move, because the barrel turns free. But on this crazy watch the indicator hand turns slowly to "down". I think there must be a wrong number of teeth on the winding wheel, the Planetary gear or the barrel. Maybe Hamilton produced some watches with different parts and someone replaced a wrong part. We have found the cause of the problem. The ratched wheel (68 teeth) has been replaced once by a non original wheel with only 60 teeth. With the original wheel now the watch works perfect. Thank you Holger |
