Hi there, I could use some advise. I have what I think is a late 40's Gruen wrist watch which used to belong to my father. I've had it in for a COA 2 times while I was in possession of it. The first time the watch came back everything seemed to be business as usual except cleaner. The second time I sent it in for a COA(to a different shop)when the watch returned is was much stiffer to adjust the time that it has ever been in the past. Also when winding the watch it used to make a ratcheting noise when winding forward as well as back, but now only makes this noise in the forward direction. When I asked the repair man he said that it should be tight like this to prevent the impression that the watch is losing time & that it probably only make the winding noise when going forward because the watch is properly lubricated now. Does this sound right?

The stiffer setting of the time may be due to the watchmaker routinely tightening the canon pinion. Often, after years of use, the canon pinion will wear and become loose on the center wheel pinion, allowing the hands to slip (I think this might be what he was trying to describe by "losing time"). They should have some friction, but if too tight, it can cause other problems (loss of teeth) with the clutch wheel, winding pinion or other parts.

It should have some resistance when setting, but not require you to force it.
