I picked up a vintage mens LeCoultre wristwatch. I'm hoping someone can help me with dating it. The movement serial number is 738323. It also is marked LeCoultre Co., Swiss, 17J unadjusted, 438/4CW, VXN. Does this model have a name?

Shugart's book shows VXN as Vacheron & Constantin, LeCoultre. What was the relationship between LeCoultre and VC? Any info would be appreciated....

Last question. Would anyone like to give me a rough estimate to it's value? The case is marked 18K. The old man I got it from said he never liked it and was seldom worn. Looks almost like new. Sorry about the poor picture.

Thank you, Chris

Please perform a search on "VXN" there are several threads that cover this topic. Vacheron has never made a LeCoultre movement.

Well, I never said I thought Vacheron made the movement. I was wondering what the relationship was. I'll do a search of VXN.

Does anyone have an idea of the date of manufacture? It has a 40s look to it. Thank you, Chris.

The movement would indicate an early 1950s manufacture, off the top of my head around 1952.

Two similar examples are listed in Cooksey Shugart on page 898. Both are 14k and are priced at: 1) Dealer buy, $700US; 2) Dealer sell, $1000US; 3) Mint, $1500/1700US.

I'd be really cautious using Cooksey & Shuggart as a pricing tool, though in thise case it sounds reasonable.

There are so many watches in there I'd love to pay the high value on or much more and so many I wouldn't even want to take for $25.
