Dear All, being into watches for short time only I fell in love with a very "simple" JLC that looks rather smart to me. The seller is giving this picture of the movement, saying it's a 885, but afaik those are automatics, aren't they? Could anyone in here be kind enought to tell me if this movement is worth buying/collecting and if parts are available for reconditionning if necessary ? Tnaks a lot in advance for all infmartion you could give me! Cheers

It looks like the cal. 885 is a manual wind movement. Does you watch look like the one on this website? http://www.noncompos.com/Watch/Watchpage.htm?jlcsshw Zaf can tell you more about the movement than I, but parts can be tough to find for any vintage JLC watch. If it's in good shape, it may not need any parts for a long time. Good luck with the watch, gatorcpa |

Thanks for answering my post, actually "my" watch, if it becomes mine looks like hereunder. I really like it but the crown is not marked and I don't know if it's an aftermarket crown or if it's genuine. Concerning the movement and the parts I was just asking because a watchmaker once told me, when I was going to buy a nice wintage omega with a 30-T2 movement that it would be a pain in the a** to get parts... The watch is said to work fine and to keep time. Any hints what money I should spend on this kind of watch anyone ?

In my very, very, non-expert opinion, something about the dial does not look right to me. Black dials were not considered "in style" for dress watches in the 1950's and 60's. Most are later restorations. Also, the "Swiss Made" is rarely separated like that on genuine dials. This one smell a bit like a latter-day India restoration job. Some of these can be quite nicely done, but the quality is not consistant. Hopefully, either Zaf or Ilja, who are true experts, can give their opinions. Take care, gatorcpa |

I agree with you. All the watches from the "seller with the yellow tube" smell fishy. Looking at the picture, the dial is an obvious refinish (an likely not a JLC originally). Just look at how the index have been polished (round edges). Also, JLC logo much too white. I suspect Dauphine hands not to be JLC (they are "flat") and the crown is not JLC of course. To tell you what I have always thought of these watches on the yellow tube: Actually I think nothing but the movement in them is JLC. I am looking forward to Zaf opinion on this |

Oops, good for me I let it go....thanks all for your help! I'll keep on reading and posting on this forum as I am still looking for a JLC to wear when my everydays "Sinn" is just too big...and far less classy |

Dial & crown are not original. Hands might me, they did use flat Dauphine too. Case is probably JLC, just very polished. What is the yellow tube? |

Yellow tube is actually the support to which the watch is strapped to. There is a seller on the bay which always present his watches on a yellow tube (as per second picture here), and I have noted that in most occasions the JLCs presented that way featured at least several details subject to criticism (most of these watches very surprisingly have black dials, including models for which I don't know of any existing black version. . .) |
