Generally I prefer not to comment on other peoples sales unless there is an authenticity issue. I'll do it this time however. At the ~$150 price it is at, it's a good deal, however, 2 things to keep in mine: 1) It's a small watch 2) The dial has been re-painted.

Now that that auction is over, my comments to the gallery is that I agree with the dial being re-painted and it is washed out a bit? The crystal if it's original has a crack between 6PM and 7PM. IMHO, that's a non issue since it's on the edge and doesn't let moisture in. Zaf, what's your take on small edge cracks?

Another note. The seller didn't mention the crack. I also sent him a message regarding the crack but I never got a response. I guess he didn't care to respond since the auction was only hours away from closing and he must have liked the numbers already. Here is what he said about the crystal "It has a clean scratch free crystal". So I still refer back to my last post about that...

Crystal issues on round watches are very easy and cheap to deal with, so it should have no bearing on whether to buy a watch or not. I doubt it is the original crystal.

Zaf,

Regarding the watch on this auction: 8919527737

In your opinion, does the crown look original? Also, does the dial appear to be un-restored? Finally, I don't see a serial number on the movement. For the 438/4CW movement, is the serial number typically hidden somewhere?

Thanks,
Bruce

The crown looks replaced, but people make too big of a deal out of crowns. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I can't tell regarding the dial without seeing it in person, the serial number is there, in between the plates, just below the mainspring barrel.

I emailed the seller and he says the serial number is 817xxx. From that, can you estimate manufacture date of the 438/4CW movement?

Also, is there anything special about this movement? Have you had many problems with it?

The movement date to about 1953. Nothing special about the movement other than parts are hard to find.
