I am in the process of getting an insurance appraisal for a JLC- lady diamond/plat. watch. While I understand that the materials will play an important part of valuation, I am concerned that collector's value will not be considered correctly or even if it should be taken into consideration. While I do not know the weight of the piece, I do know that there are approx. 9ct. of diamonds set in a platinum watch and band.

My insurance coverage will be for replacement cost, and I'm not sure that the watch could be replaced. Should I be looking for a special kind of appraisal that would include the collector's value of this watch or is this just not a valid issue?
Thanks, RP

Hi. The replacement cost will be SUBSTANTIALLY higher than the "collector value". I think your best bet, is to try to find a new model that is similar and use that as the replacement cost. Collectors will generally not pay a whole lot for ladies watches outside of the value of the materials.

Thanks for your prompt reply and recommendation Zaf. As I am not familiar with the Jaeger-LeCoultre group of watches, can you make a recommendation on what model (are you referring to a new model) might be considered similar?

I don't know, do you have a photo of yours? The value of ladies platinum w/diamonds, as a new watch, is pretty astronomical vis a vis the actual value of the materials. You can try the JLC site:

http://www.jaeger-lecoultre.com/

They have a "Joallerie" section which are more jewelry pieces.

I have looked on the JLC site and my watch seems to be an older model.

The Joaillerie 101 Riviere series has a similar bracelet, but the stones in mine are rectangular baguettes, the face is surrounded by baguettes and there are marques embellishments on each side.

The serial number 870792A is on the back. I have no idea what the value is and/or how it would relate to newer models. I have also searched the net for something similar, but have had no luck. I thought I uploaded a photo, I will try again. I would appreciate your comments - RPJLC- lady diamond/plat

Did you have an idea of the approximate diamond value? I'm not very good with diamonds.
The issue here remains that the "collector value" is going to be substantially lower than the "replacement cost" as compared to a new one, perhaps by a factor of 20.

You watch is likely from the late 1950s/early 1960s and would have probably cost in the neighborhood of $1000-1500 when new (40+ years ago) which was an astronomical amount.

Thanks a lot Zaf, you have been very helpful. I do not have a value on the stones yet, but I will be getting the appraisal very soon. From what you are telling me, there is no need to seek someone with special watch experience.

Warmest regards, Regina

Put it this way, the "collector value" will be close to the value of the materials (at least in that ballpark), the replacement cost will be 10-15 times that or more. A new similar JLC will have an astronomical price.

I noticed that other posts indicate a watch can be more accurately dated with the case & movement number. Case - 870792A Movement - 1530522.

Also, can you advise me on the proper way to wind the watch? There is an arrow stamped on the crown, pointing counterclockwise. Is the watch wound in one direction (the direction of the arrow)only? Does this arrow also relate to how the time is set? Thanks again, Regina

You wind the watch in the direction of the arrows. You set the watch by pulling the button up and tunring it. Press bak in when done.

The watch dates to circa 1964.
