Hi,

I was recently given a LeCoutre Futurematic watch by a family member who knows nothing about the watch and noticed the crown on the back is not inscribed with "SLIDE-DO NOT LIFT" like others I've seen online. Why is that?

Also, would anyone know approx what year this watch was made.

Thanks!

The Futurematic is an automatic (self-winding) watch that has no manual winding crown. The button in the back is for setting the time only.

If you slide the button gently towards the center, you should feel the gear engage and as you turn the button, the hands should move. DO NOT lift the button, as you can easily damage the movement inside.

If the watch is running prior to setting the time, sliding the button will make it stop temporarily. This is normal and called the "hack" feature. It makes it very easy to synchronize the watch to another time source.

Once the time is set, then slide the button back out towards the rim and the watch should start right up.

Zaf, you wouldn't happen to have a scan of the original instuctions to post, would you?

I have an exact twin to your watch. JLC told me that the movement was made in 1952. I think these were made between 1951 and about 1958. If properly cared for, they are excellent timekeepers. I just ran mine for a week and it was off only about 3 sec.

Here is a web site with a lot of information on the Futurematic:

Enjoy your special watch,

Stupid me!

I didn't see the words "not inscribed on the crown" in your post, when referring to the backset button.

And here I go giving a lecture, without answering your question.

I guess the writing wore off, or the button was replaced. The back does look quite worn.
Sorry for running on like that,

If you want to replace it by a "SLIDE-DO NOT LIFT" engraved one, check on the bay, the famous australian seller is putting 7 of them for sale !

The writing on the crown has worn off. As far as instructions, I have them, but I'd rather not post them to a public site at this time.

Come on Zaf post it - we'll still buy your book if we're still alive when it gets published.
