Reading varouis entries from the archive, I came across this one which interested so much to use google: 1. Most promising lead I've found and pursued was the existence of a monthly issued paper by "NS Lehrerbund" (national-socialist teachers league) called "Hilf Mit"* which was aimed at older pupils/members of the hitler (Adolf Nazi) youth. This periodical organized several essay contests such as 'Volksgemeinschaft - Schicksalsgemeinschaft', 'Seefahrt ist not' and 'Für Deutschlands Freiheit - Der Kampf im Osten'**. As in relation to 'Reichssieger' (which means a winning contestant whithin the (political or factual) boarders of the Reich entity): it has to be considered typical, that (civil) organisation were organized in the following kind of (rough) structure: kreis->gau->reich - so there should be 'Kreissieger' and 'Gausieger'. I'm not sure that prices of the contest have been announced previously (at the beginning stage at the competition) so I'd likely have to take a look at the offline catalogue whithin the facility of 'Deutsche Nationalbibliothek' to be sure***; however the last issue of 'Hilf Mit' was released in december '42 it seems- so perhaps we won't find a public notification of the winners (plural is in question: How many could've won with their propaganda entry in the section Luftwaffe?). Leaves question: Why on earth a JLC-wristwatch for a 13/14/15 year old? 2. A 'real' Reichssieger from Reichsberufswettkaempfe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichsberufswettkampf) is not possible in the context year (1942/43). 3. A swiss watch as price seems inappropriate for winning whatever competition (collecting for charity) set up by 'Winterhilfswerk' (as another idea). 4. A Reichssieger whithin the Luftwaffe is possible: however one has to find/google a competition which would fit to the motto 'Hilf Mit'/'Kampf im Osten'. Perhaps it was something for ground level stuff only: Hilf mit (do your share/help with) not to waste...precious plumbum! greetings *http://home.arcor.de/hitlerjugendzeitung/hilfmit.htm **https://www2.landesarchiv-bw.de/ofs21/olf/struktur.php?bestand=19605&sprungId=14 48860&letztesLimit=suchen ***will do; costs (you) one JLC however (masterly refurbished with working luminous hands) |

Thanks for the post. Have you seen this marking on another JLC watch like yours? So far this is the only such engraving I have seen, so the "contest" idea or it was used as an "award" is more likely. However, it still doesn't 100% explain what the other non-marked watches were used for. |

Hi Zaf, no, I do not own a watch with this markings nor have i've seen it before (but I have to admit that I wasn't interested in vintage/militarish looking JLC-watches neither and so I'm not surprised, that Ilja or Claudio did come across these things). As for your second remark: "However, it still doesn't 100% explain what the other non-marked watches were used for." you're right of course. So the german gouvernment may have bought many things for whatever or special purpose. Most certainly it should be possible to emphasize that these watches were also bought as a batch indeed. Where's the rest of it (10000, 1000)? Maybe just a bomb did hit not only the roof of a warehouse during war(as General Howard* pictured the RAF and their pilots: "All they're really interested in, is flying around and dropping things on people."). From my history teacher (he was born and raised in Weimar, Thunringia) i do know that russian soldiers were interested in: watches, cameras and bicycles (not knowing about the interests of the other allies: there is still a small chance that we'll see 300x cal. 463 JLC NOS). *he is a fictional character from the series 'Yes, Prime Minister' by the BBC (early eighties). I think I'll stroll to Nationalbibliothek (but I don't know whether they've got the various 'Hilf Mit' issues in their posession: I do exspect it, the online catalogue doesn't reveal it however and it'll take some time. Maybe there'll be a hint. Greetings |
