Could anyone give their learned impression of the following Cal. 479 watch?
My own observation:
The movement seems a bit worse-for-wear and there is the underline of "Jaeger LeCoultre" on the dial is broken in one place. I've seen some perfectly pristine examples of this movement and was also suspected they'd been polished.
Is this watch considered pure and if so, what is the condition considered to be?

Thanks very much for any advice.

Michael

Hi, I don't understand the question.

Sorry Zaf,let me be more clear.

I was wondering if anything jumped out at you as 'not correct" or perhaps suggested a poorly executed restoration (particularly the condition of the bezel/case in terms of polish, etc.

Further, the condition of the movement concerns me. Is this level of wear and grime expected (for a watch over 60yrs old!) or can I expect to find better examples easily?

What is the general value of these pieces and how would this piece fit into that evaluation?

After I posted this question originally, I read your 'sympathetic restoration article' dealing with the same watch. Does the watch in my photos represent original state, a sympathetic restoration, or something wholly less desirable?

Many thanks,
Michael

The watch has lost its plating and the spring bars on there are not correct. It should have fixed bars. The rest looks OK. The movement can be made to run properly, even with poor cosmetics, so it all depends on what you want in a collectible watch. If it bothers you, just wait for a better example.

The watch actually keeps time - and personally I am not bothered by flaws that merely reflect the age of the watch . This is part of the charm. I just want to avoid any amateurish pitfalls. I'm just starting to get my bearings with vintage watches. Bottom line: I don't yet know what I want in a collectable watch. This forum, your JLC book, and your willingness to answer questions are proving invaluable. Thanks again,
Michael
