Hi,

I just bought a JLC 'Polaris' and I have been advised that it may not be 'correct'. I've been pointed in your direction as 'absolute experts'.
I'd appreciate your comments.
I have attached a single picture, I cannot seem to get more than one picture uploaded - I guess I'm doing something wrong!
Any suggestions for posting multiple images gratefully received. Otherwise I can email them to you.
Thanks in advance.

A lot of things wrong with it, crowns are not genuine, dial is redone and the rotating divers insert is not correct. The case back has a high chance of being made up as well. The movement is genuine, the middle of the case is possibly genuine.

Overall, I don't like it at all!

Hi, here is a comparison between some of your pictures (on the left side) and from a 1968 Polaris. Sorry to say but I have seen some 2 or 3 of these on eBay on the last year, and are probably fakes with an original 825 from a Memovox. Give it back if you have the option

I've looked at the larger photos on another forum, and I think the entire case is made up! Several details do not look correct.

Sorry to say, but fake all the way except the 825 movement which is original "mass production" by JLC.

As Polaris models have risen quickly in price, I suppose it was inevitable that fake cases and dials would begin appearing. This example had some obvious flaws, but I can see how they might be corrected in the next iteration of counterfeits, making the buying/selling of these models a much more dangerous endeavor. Spooky!

I'm sure we will see more, as this is not an isolated case. I have seen two or three of these coming on eBay from an Australian seller, and then one from eBay France. I suspect this last one was in fact from somebody who bought from the Australian seller. It sold for 8,000 EUR - quite a lot of money for a fake.

Yes, I know the Australian seller you're speaking of. They seem to operate under a couple of different IDs and sell tons of frankenwatches and re-cased pocketwatches.

And of course, after learning the Polaris was a complete fake, the seller promptly pulled it permanently from the market, right? WRONG. The fake Polaris is listed for sale on eBay again. *sigh*

Yes, it looks to be the same. Buy-it-now at USD 12,000 he has set, well knowing that it is a fake. Makes me sick.

I'm not seeing it on ebay. Do you have an item number? I'm in the market for an original, and would like to see what it looks like as it relates to counterfeits.
Thanks.

Franco,

I worry that is was simply remove to accept a Buy-It-Now offer from an unwary victim, because the seller's response to my email indicated that he would *not* remove it.

When I wrote the seller stating that the case, bezel, dial and all parts of the watch except thew movement were counterfeit (and giving the reasons why, the seller wrote back:

"hi, thank you for you e-mail, the watch was just returned from jlc , the crowns are new as tyou can read, the dial is a okd restored and the case is ok. however i will check.
regards
richard"

I *highly* doubt the truthfulness of the seller's claim that this watch was "returned from JLC", so I'm also skeptical that the seller would remove the auction out of conscience. I just wanted to alert readers to pay extra close attention to any Polaris they see on other markets, because this one may circulate outside eBay if it was sold to an unsuspecting dealer who bought it to flip.

I had a similarly edifying experience with a Universal Polerouter Sub super-compressor I actually bought on eBay for what seemed a truly excellent price. I immediately had it inspected by my watchmaker who advised that the movement, although genuine Universal, was a 'drawer' movement that was not original to the watch. By that he meant that it was badly worn and scratched as tho' it had sat a long time in a drawer, in a way that could not have happened to a movement that had spent its life in a watch case. He could smoothe all that damage out, but it wouldn't change the reality. I was able to return it for a full refund, but days later it was back on eBay and smoke me if it didn't sell for twice what I paid for it!

As has been said on another forum, 'you gotta love eBay - it rewards knowledge, diligence and deft action, but punishes ignorance, foolishness & greed.'
