Some people say that the only "correct" hands for a 65 are the dauphine. Is that correct?

I would agree with that. Others argue that the stick hands are OK as well.

If i wanted to find a replacement outer caseback with the 16 holes, what is the best way to do so?

I think even JLC is out now. You'll need to have one made (varying degrees of success there).

I have a 1965 Polaris that I sent to JLC. It was also missing the outer case back. They informed me that my particular model did not come with an outer back? They have sent me an email to that effect. Can anyone verify this. Thanks.

And why did they produce a re-edition with actually this case feature than to begin with?
JLC simply does not tell the truth to you, they are just to lasy or the person has no clue.

In general, as Zaf pointed out, they most likely run out of case back parts. Only a self organized reproduction will help.

So, OK, assuming i need to find a replacement caseback, how do i go about doing so? If i offered $50,000 for one, i would get no end of offers. So it must be about two things; how much and where to ask. Given the price isnt for discussion here, is there some hint on where to ask?

If you're making ONE it's going to be in the $1000-2000 range. If you're making 50, it's going to be $2000-3000. Of course you'd need to find an original one to go out on "loan" for what could be months, I don't think you'll get many takers there.
