In Zaf's book, he frequently refers to reference numbers in addition to case numbers and movement numbers. Do these come from catalogues? I rarely see any reference # on the watches, and am wondering how you tell what the reference # is.

As an example, I have an early European 18k gold Memovox with roller lugs that looks exactly like the one pictured in the book. Its movement number (648xxx) would date it to 1950. There is also a case number on the outside back, but no sign of a reference number. The one in Zaf's book is described as 'ref. 3150'. Would mine be the same reference?
Cheers, Chris

Chris,

Very nice watch! You'll find no reference number printed anywhere on the watch (inside or out), which is the case for many older LeCoultre and JLC models. The factory reference number in these instances comes from factory literature or vintage advertisements.

I've had a few of these models in 18K and in stainless steel through my collection over the years and they're one of my favorites to wear. You have a nice example that appears to have a nice original/unrefinished dial. Here are a few pix of one in my collection to show you what your watch looks like inside the case and what markings are there:

Perhaps you'll need to add a stainless version of this watch to your collection next:

Greg

Thanks, Greg - I love the hands on your steel JLC Memovox. I attach 2 photos of my much later steel US market Memovox (cal. K910)- note the number 2677 inside the case, by the movement references. Would that indicate a reference #?

Regards,
Chris

Chris,

Beautiful SS Memovox! Actually, this model (you are correct, it is a Ref 2677) is one of the first Memovox models I ever purchased (20+ years ago). I really like the stylized dial numerals. It was NOS/unworn and I could never bring myself to wear it, so I sold it a few years back.

Just to go back and round out out the available styles on the ref 3150 Memovox models, here's an example I had in stainless, but with stainless hands and dial numerals to complement the 2-tone stainless model I posted above:

Then, the next in the series issued by JLC was a similar model with curved lugs:
