Greetings all, I am new to this forum but not new to this watch. It is the watch I recall seeing on my father's wrist my entire life. I'm now 45 and my father is gone, but I would love to get this watch running. I've attached a mediocre photo and hope that some of you can help me identify exactly which model this is.
Basically, I'm frustrated that I have made the mistake of asking watch repair folks with good reputations to work on this, only to be told after a year at one place, that they cannot find some unspecified part. Even worse, the watch seems to be getting worse with each handling by these repair folks. It is now rattling inside. Most recently a repair shop outside NYC told me that the setting mechanism needs to be replaced. When I pressed their receptionist about the matter, she then used the terms setting wheels and calendar as if they were the same thing as setting mechanism. I find it a little hard to believe that the entire mechanism is broken, but perhaps. Does this make sense to folks? Last, I have an email to Zaf about possibly repairing this but he is currently on vacation so I didn't want to bother him too much about this repair. If any of you can help, I'd really appreciate it. Sincerely, Spence |

The "rattling" is supposed to be there. It is the alarm hammer in the movement that will sometimes rattle against the alarm post when you move your wrist. From the somewhat muddy description you give about the setting problems, it sounds as if one or both of the crown wheels may be showing wear or missing teeth. This is one of the more common problems I've seen with the cal 911 in your watch. If this is the issue, the hands will stick or advance in a jerky manner when you try to set the time. Does this sound like the problem you're having? |

Gregb....Thanks! yes that does sound like the problem, actually. The hands do stick when trying to set the time. Also, the alarm setting and time setting seem to be out of synch. If the time is noon, I might have to move the alarm setting to 9 or so to get the alarm to ring. Would this also be typical with this problem? I am hoping that there isn't a problem with the clutch wheels as I hear these are hard to come by. As for the rattling, it seems much more pronounced than I recall, but I hope you are right that it is just the alarm. Appreciate your feedback! spence |
