Hi Everyone, I'm basically totally new to the vintage watch scene but they really are beautiful time pieces and I want to start collecting. However, I am sure that there must be a lot of fakes out there so I am wondering what tell-tale signs there are of fake watches. I think I'm going to bid on this watch here on Ebay but I'm unsure as to whether it is genuine or not. Could somebody please help? I would really appreciate it. Thanks guys. http://cgi.ebay.com/Jaeger-LeCoultre-military-GSTP-large-wristwatch-WW2era_W0QQi temZ280309640868QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Jewelery_Watches_Watches_MensWatches_GL?ha sh=item280309640868&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C24 0%3A1318 |

1) It's not very good form to post questions on a watch dealer's discussion board asking questions about watches for sale on a competing site. Generally discouraged. 2) The watch in question is simply a converted pocket watch... nothing "military" about it. To make a very generalized statement, 99.999% of the "rare" watches being offered by dealers out of the Ukraine are simply old pocket watches that have been re-cased in modern HUGE wrist watch cases, re-dialed with fantasy dial layouts and modified almost beyond recognition. No collectible value and you can take any claims made in the text description as pure fiction. Greg |

Zaf has a nice-looking military-style watch that looks very similar to the watch you asked about. The difference is, Zaf's watch is authentic and original. You can view it here:
http://www.classicwatch.com/asp/buyitnow.asp?Where=(Ref%3D%27rxr0153%27)&Step=1 In addition, as a beginning collector, you'll quickly learn that "who" you buy from is one of the most important parts of safely collecting vintage pieces. JLC and Military are 2 specialties of FinerTimes. You can buy safely here. The Ukraine... not so much. Greg |

Greg, thanks a lot for the advice. It immediately seemed dodgy to me that all these watches were coming out of the Ukraine. Also, sorry for not quite knowing the etiquette regarding posting. |
