Hello everyone- I'm new.
I have been reading the comments, v. interesting. JLC certainly my favourite maker.
Regarding refinished dials- do they affect value significantly? I like to wear my watches as much as possible but get nervous around radium dials. I teach Physics and use my 40's watches as demos when discussing radioactivity. There is a common myth that the radiation does not penetrate the quartz crystal. This is true for the alpha but not the gamma! Opinion seems to be divided on the health risks but for daily use is not recommended. Therefore- I only wear watches with refinished dials -and a few disasters I tried to do myself!
Am I alone? Do collectors not wear their watches, wear them only occasionally, deem the risk negligible? Have I invested in uncollectable watches?
I would be interested to hear your thoughts.
Thanks,
Jamie.

Hi Jamie,

some guys did some research on radiation, especially for IWC military watches:

Redone dials are a "no go" for die-hard collectors, removing just the radium might be an option, but personally I prefer all original dials.

That article was great. I knew that different parts of the body were / more less sensitive to ionising radiation but hadnt heard anything about the wrist in particular. I may change my approach now!
Thanks very much.
