Hi,

I've been offered a vintage JLC. I'm new to the marked and would be glad if anyone could comment on some of my questions. I've attached a picture.

- It's said to be a original Memovox 1959 - true?
- Is it an european or american edition?
- Case diameter?
- The clockwork is 825 - any known problems to this?
- Is it suitable as a daily watch for wear-and-tear or a collecters item?
- Waterproof or not?
- Any suggestions on a a reasonable price?

Thanks & regards

1959 would be the FIRST year of the 825, so it could be true BUT the hand style would indicate late, like 1965+.

- Is it an european or american edition?
Euro.

- Case diameter?
37mm

- The clockwork is 825 - any known problems to this?
Make sure both the time & alarm set without crunching.

- Is it suitable as a daily watch for wear-and-tear or a collecters item?
Yes.

- Waterproof or not?
Not any more by a long shot.

- Any suggestions on a a reasonable price?
Around $1400 give or take, more if very clean and more if original bracelet.

Hi,

Thanks for the fast and precise answer. I'm really looking forward to see this watch "in real life" monday.

I'm curious to know how u can tell it's an european edition?

And to be 100% sure: it's suitable as a daily watch?!

About the hands: could they've been changed for some reason?

Thanks again.

Regards

Hi again,

The model# is 783263, I've tried to decode the number by information found on www.jlcsociety.com, but I've not manage to succeed. Can anybody tell if this give some important information, e.g. 'bout the age of the watch?

Regards

That isn't the model number it is the case number. The case reference number is E855. I can date the watch if you have the movement serial number.

Thanks Zaf. Maybe u can give a short describtion af the terminology .. i.e. what is

- The movement serial - and where is it printed?
- The casenumber? (guess: a running production number?)
- The case reference number? (guess: give me case type?)
- Other numbers a should know of?

Know this may be silly questions, but being a rookie in the field I'm rather confused.

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

Thanks for the answer. I'm still curious to know what type of information the numbers hold, i.e. what do the below numbers tell me about the watch?

Movement serial?
Casenumber?
Case reference number?

Regards
Tue

P.S. Zaf, how can u tell it's an european edition?

The "European" edition would be marked Jaeger-LeCOultre on the dial, the American one "LeCoultre" up until about 1976 after which all were marked Jaeger-LeCoultre.

The numbers allow you to date the watch, if you do not have the case reference number, the case serial number will give you that, but only the factory can do that look up.

Hi,

I saw the above watch today. Beatiful.

I seems the model came with a black and a silver dial in 1959 (maybe the silver model was issued a little later). The black model had pointed arms, while the silver seems to have had retangular arms as shown on the above picture.

In 2001 the dial was damaged as the glass broke. The watch was repaired at the 'manufacture JLC' in Switzerland where a new memowox dial was put on. How does this affect the value of the watch??

Regards

The dial switch should not impact value.

I'm not sure. Nothing like a solid gold or silver on the alarms, probably a chrome plated base metal for the hands and a brass alloy of some kind for the dial.

Him

I bought the watch. Happy with it. Need a little advise on the daily use:

The watch is not waterproof for sure, so I won't jump in the pool. But how about rainy days where the watch may be exposed to water because of inappropiate cloth ... will this damage the watch or can it stand some direct rain?

Thanks again.

I think you're OK with direct rain....just don't submerge it.

The 916 was made between 1969-1978, I'd imagine your piece is from the early 1970s though as the LeCoultre name was no longer used after 1976.

The US alrams aren't really going to have a "model name". If it is 14k solid gold it should go for $1500-1700 (and up) depending on originality and condition...

I hope you can help me to indicate the age of my Memovox:
C 825, number 1431842, Lenght 21 cm, depth 12,8 cm, weight 50,1 gram (18 carat solid gold with steel back), housediameter 36,5 cm.
There are no numbers on the dialplate and the dialplate is only with the word Jaeger-LeCoultre, not the specific logo.
The former owner claims that the Memovox is made in 1951, but I read that the 825 (with date) was made starting 1959, so 1951 cannot be correct.
Question: what age is more likely?
Regards, Erik

Hi,

I have a watch exactly the same as the first picture on this page (the one which was posted April 2, 2004). The only difference is that it is gold (yellow). It has been handed down to me - never worked. I want to get it repaired - what's the best option?
