I was digging through the collection yesterday and decided to pull out my cal 101 (world's smallest movement) and shoot some pictures. I've been dying to do this, but just never seem to have the time. I thought the board might enjoy seeing the results.

This is a watch you don't see very often. Though it has been in production since 1929, probably only a few hundred examples have been produced. Just try finding one for sale anywhere. This particular watch is from about the 1950s (a guess, because I can't find a serial # on the movement) and is one of the earlier 15-jewel models. It has a platinum (.950) case and band with about 2.5 carats of diamonds.

You don't really realize how small these movements are until you see them next to everyday items (or have to work on them). The white objects in the picture below are grains of rice:

That's a fine hand with a camera as well.

Greg-
Great shots comparing it with a matchstick head. I've read about the 101 but this really puts it into perspective. I can't quite make out what it says on the movement, which has to be hard to engrave in the first place.

Jim,

Correct. The lettering is unbelievably small. Look at the grains of rice next to it in the picture to get a size reference. I'm glad I wasn't the one tasked with machining a dozen words of readable text onto an area that miniscule.

This movement is only worked on my JLC's "elite" watchmakers I am told. Only a small percentage of the watchmakers ever touch it.
