Dear moderators, experts and JlC lovers! Only some months ago I fell suddenly in love with vintage 50`s and started a very small beginner`s Collection of Omega`s, Lemania`s, Zenith`s, IWC and Navitimer of that period. Besides the technical qualities of that age, I as an amateur, am fascinated specially by the aesthetics of these works of art. And so it is only natural to be extremly attracted by the classical JLC`s, right now for me the Memovox. Since some weeks I thankfully have read as much I could here in this forum to learn more about the Memovox. Now, being in the phase of picking one, a question arises in the discussion with a potential seller. Which year(s) and in which references happened the transition from the "buzzing" sound to the "gong" (in german "Klingelton")? thx all for your educational work here! P.S.: Should I get one, I promise to post pics and more info.... |

Not sure when the exact year is, but probably mid 1990s for the first gong. I don't know the particulars of the modern memovox, but the old ones used to strike a post that was welded to the inside of the case back. I suspect anything that gongs is striking a coil on the edge of the movement similar to an old repeater. |

In a blog from "Horolograph" I have found the following: Only the most recent 5 movement references (Cal. 919, 918, 914, 909/1, 956) starting in 1989 with the Grand Reveil perpetual calendar/alarm and its Cal 919. These ringing Memovoxes use a gong to make a bell ringing sound, the others all used a vibrating hammer that makes the sound shown in the video in my previous post." Here the link to the full article: http://horolograph.blogspot.co.at/2012/10/review-of-lecoultre-memovox-ref-2677.h tml Maybe helpful (hope, the info given is correct). regards Phranz |
