Hello :-) I was wondering what magazines JLC mostly advertised in during the 50's. I realize there are some sellers on the internet of vintage ads, but I was wanting to be able to find them myself. I would use them mostly for reference purposes.

I'm guessing The Du would have been one of them (Swiss mag) and L'Illustration was another. Is this correct ? French is okay with me, it doesn't have to be US, but if there was a mag in the US that they advertised in during the 50's, that would be great to know as well.

My second question is a companion to the above: what *is* the best way to reference identification of circa 50's and 60's pieces ? Looking at the JLC site, you have to pay a fee for them to dive into their archives, and there is no guarantee. So what is the best way for a lay person to get their hands on good reference materials without shelling out hundreds of dollars for a coffee table book, or official archive diving ? I'm thinking finding advertisements might be one of those ways ... but how would a person go about getting their hands on vintage ads in French and Swiss mags whilst living in the US (I'm in the US) ?

Any help is much appreciated ... thanks in advance :-)

Get Zaf's book, it is by far the only substantial work on vintage JLC's.
Or buy vintage catalogs as we did for the book project. ;)

I'm actually interested more in vintage clocks (not wristwatches), like those here:

Where would you buy vintage catalogs from, JLC directly ? Looking at their website, I didn't see where it was obvious how to gain a vintage catalogue from them. Do you have any recommendations on how to buy one, or find them ?

I used to buy them via sites like http://www.en.zvab.com/index.do or Ebay around the globe.
It took ages and cost a little fortune - so don't expect an instant miracle. :-)
