Here is another recent acquisition for me, which I bought just because I liked the case. I believe it is referred to as Niello. The movement is a Hebdomas 8 day movement, which won't wind. The dial is in good shape and is a bit unusual, but I don't think these movements are particularly desirable or collectable. In any event - opinions please - is this watch potentially worth (an expensive?) mechanical overhaul, or should I gut it and just reuse the case for something more interesting? Comments appreciated.

Hi, i'm new here but if you are in the USA its going to cost you a small fortune to get taken care of. Prob 450 bucks. Not worth it! I have all my stuff fixed in eastern europe for a heck of a lot less. I get 10 watches fixed in eastern europe for the price i'd get one fixed in the US. I can help if you like. I had a minute repeater overhauled, i was quoted over 2 grand in the US. I took a vacation to Europe for a week, and got my watch done and paid less. Even on the weak dollar.

Noted. I have no issue using an Eastern European watchmaker, however I would be very reluctant to use FedEx or such to manage a shipment - for fear of security and customs problems. So unless I save up sufficient work to justify taking a trip personally to Eastern Europe, and can line up a watchmaker who can service a number of watches in a short time window, I don't see this as a practical solution for me.

Probably would be better to just have it done in the US if its just one thing. My guy, if he is doing work on regular watches, no complications, then he prefers i give him 10 at a time. He then hands them off to a watchmaker family. Father and two sons. They do amazing work. How much would your watch guy charge to do 10 watches? Complete ones, cleaning, servicing, oiling.. I read somewhere on here zaf and his guy charge 500 to 600 for a repeater. This is a very fair price for the US. Around florida and georgia they wont touch anything for less than 450. I don't bother i just stuff a USPS box priority mail, pay 32 bucks, has tracking too, and 6 to 10 days later its at my friends place. Yea, don't use fed ex or ups..you are right customs and other problems. Not to mention that it costs 100 dollars or more to shipp.

I have never charged more than a grand for a minute repeater that did not require an extensive list of parts to be made. As you said if it's a service only, it's generally under $600 HOWEVER people send basket cases sometimes and expect a pricing miracle.

Now, regarding the 8 day movement, it really depends if parts are needed or not. If no parts are required, I'm sure it's less than $300. Maybe even $250. Depends if the hairpsing is still true or not.
