Hi Don

I read your response to my post about the Porsche watch. You are the second person to tell me that the dial is not original. Is that common in the watch business? Do you know the guy who I bought it from from watch shows? Does putting a new dial on it lower the value of the watch..I would think so....The guy who I bought it from was very nice, I talked to him on the phone, I'm just wondering does that mean that the dial is brand new while the watch is from the 1940's or could the dial be a little old too. I still like the watch, I just wish that it was original cause that is what I thought when I bought it. Thank you for your kind help.

Leila,

Refinishing dials is quite common in the vintage watch business. Time and the elements take their toll on a dial's finish and many dials are very unattractive in original state. Typically, dials are refinished 'as original' to maintain the integrity of the piece, but a dial can be refinished in almost any manner including the addition of a logo. Please note that the original dial is re painted in the refinishing process - it is not a new dial. Sort of like painting an old car.

While refinished dials do effect the value of the more expensive watches, they have little effect on brands such as Bulova since the overall appearance of the watch is more important than the originality of it. In your case the Porsche logo may actually increase the value of the watch to members of the Porsche Club of America.

Best,
Don
