Some years ago I bought The Complete Price Guide to Watches (Shugart, Engle and Gilbert) in an attempt to price up my watch collection.I was a little disappointed at the prices they were quoting for watches I had searched for and purchased over the years. In the U.K. where I live, I had been led to understood that prices were higher than in the States, whose prices the book refected. With this in mind, I went to America, loaded with $ to buy some cheap, quality, A1 condition time pieces. Boy, was I disappoined (again!) The prices were vastly higher than those quoted in the guide. One dealer expained that the book was out of touch and that dealers joked about it. Another thought that it was some cynical attempt to talk prices down. Even at garage sales the prices were higher and people knew what their watches were worth. Also, the range of watches I was able to buy was not as good as I was led to believe. Full callender and moonphase watches are rare in the U.K. and are also rare in the U.S. as I soon found out. High class watches are also purchased at a premium. The guide is an excellent resouce for information, that I cannot dispute. I found that on a trip to France, prices were cheaper, though not for Lip watches! They cost a fortune! Has any one else found this watch buying and pricing business a little confusing? Some have thought that my trip was effected by the Johnny Foreigner syndrome..he doesn,t know the prices, let's ask more. This is not the case. The people I dealt with were friendly, reliable and eager to do a deal. The prices they were asking were the same for all.

Sounds like you need to buy *our* guide.

The Shuggart prices are often 20 years old and probably help Shuggart himself in nailing unsuspecting sellers.

no image of watch available right now. more info is Tudor/Prince OysterDate 3A, is 14k & purchased in pre WWII in Europe. maybe you can give an estimate with this info. i will post an image of the watch when i acquire it. also, the watch is in excellant working & appearance conditions, but the face of it is aged & the info on it is not readable without a jewels eye piece. Question: if I was to have it re-faced to its original condition, would the value be more or less with this done. thanks

I have a Gruen/21 with a serial# C24786 that belonged to my grandfather and it is still working. How can I find out the value? It has a black face and second had box that has precision written above the box. It is 10K gold filled.

Sounds like you have a 21 jewel Gruen precision. Unless it is unusually long in size, value will be low in gold filled as there simply isn't any demand for this type of watch.

I have a Rotary pocket watch given to me by my grandfather, I am not looking to sell it but I am curious as to its value. I think its gold plated, other than that I dont really know a lot, I dont think it will have any great monetary value, but any advice would be appreciated. the pic I have attached is not the best quality.

It is not gold, and as a non gold quartz watch, value will be very low.

If I may, how do you know that it is not gold? Isn't the manufacturer Mathey~Tissot a very valuable watch maker? i am confused on what kind of value it would hold, is it worth getting appraised

I wonder if there is some information available about Swiss watch manufacturer Docker. My grandfather (from Poland) gave me an old, 18K gold, 17 rubis, Docker wristwatch. The glass cover is unique because it isn't flat. There are some engravings on the back:
18K 0.750
symbol 104 (in a rectangular box)
number 107 (perhaps a serial number)
and something that looks like a female's head.
I believe that the watchmaker no longer exists but the watch is still working and makes wonderful sound. I have no idea how old is this watch and its value. Since I live in the Chicago area, does it make sense to send this watch to UK for cleaning?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for info on a watch my father gave me and was stolen from my house last week. I don't have numbers or pics of it so I am realy just taken a shot in the dark here. It is a longines he purchased at a us militarry post in 1969 in vietnam. I think it was stainless and it had a rectangle face with diamonds at 3 6 9 12 o'clock. It had a metal band and was a winder I remeber it said 10k filled on the back. The face had straight etch like marks running from the center straight out to the edge and gave the illusion it was a circle. the band was metal weave like and would not bend but wrapped around the wrist easy.I don't think it had a seconds dial.I wish I had taken a picture but never thought it would ever be stolen.Any help will be greatly appreciated.please e-mail any info to: [email protected] Thanks.

i guess i got wrapped up in the watch and forgot to ask sorry... I'm looking for info on the watch. Thinking someone might have an old cataloge or something that might help me get a model number or maybe pictures of a watch that looks like it or a longines that matches the description i gave. I've searched the internet but can't find anything close to it. maybe a web page or something like that to point me in a new direction for searching for old longines. any new info about that era of longines would help thanks. Robert email: [email protected] with any info or post it here.

I actually have one just like that in the shop for repair. It belongs to a customer. I will see if it doesn't have any identifying case references or something once I get it back.

I think you will find that the prices in the "Complete Guide" are what "Dealers & NAWCC Collectors" expect to pay not the average Joe on the street.

I think it's more what Mr's Shuggart & Gilbert want to PAY YOU. On just about anything even remotely desirable, the prices at professional meets are substantially higher.

I have a watch that is a wearable ring. J. Didsheim Goldschmidt Fils & Co. on workings, with numbers that match the nickle backing [the part with the ring] Can someone tell me what the proper "term" for a wearable time piece is, if it is not a necklace or pin? I want to have it cleaned and appraised, but do not want to walk in blind to my jeweler. However, I cannot find any information on educate myself with, and wonder if it is because I am refering to it as a watch. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
