Here is my second post. I didn't put much attention to my oldie mechanic wrist watches but now I have become curiouos. I don't know much about the Darwil brand name - only that it was quite popular mid-class brand in Italy. Mine watch is goldplated automatic 41 rubis Darwil with the side engraved text "Plague G10". I received it 35 years ago for my Confirmation. All I know is that it was given as a gift from the owner of the Darwil to my grandfather who was in a diplomatic service. My Grand gave me this watch for a present. It is beautiful watch - much more in real than on the picture. It is very precise so far, that is after so many years only 10 sec per day. Here it is the photo:
I tried to find some more about that watch on the internet but found "nada". Some more info? |

Hi, I own one too, actually I have been wearing it for weeks. Its a brand that was swiss export to balkan countries and Italy I heard. They mostly used Unitas movements. I guess Darwil followed the jewel hype. If your watch is automatic only 21 jewels are functional... the rest od the rubis is only marketing.. Im not a watch expert, but been reading allot lately.. Mine has a number 9006 on the back. Is this a type number of the Unitas movement? |

youd have to open it up and post a pic of the movement. Mine has a unitas movment 17 jewels, to be precise Unitas 6325. Not sure about the quality of this movement, maybe someone can comment. Darwil is now listed bankrupt on the internet, however my watchmaker said that the owner retired... some time ago... he says he knows him, cause during the 60s my watchmaker had an official Darwil service in Novigrad, Croatia.. Thats all I know.. |

Here is a old postcard with a Darwil shop in Trieste, Italy, which is about 40 km from Novigrad, Istria, Croatia... {img}http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/7623/20100205185309.jpg{/img} |

I would like to open it but have no idea how to do that. Do I need a special tool? I have also a manual winding Darwil which was marked as incabloc, wateproof and 17 rubis. I didn't use it much as I was always too lazy for a manual winding. It is not precise, most probably it needs repairment or cleaning the mechanism. It is becoming interesting but it seems that I first need to learn how to open backs to exlpore some more... |

I went to the watchmaker who had a licence for Darwil watches. He wasn't familiar with the model but when he opened it he said that it is with the 25 jewels ETA-2452 movement. He said that it is very quality movement from sixties. Darwil added aditional 16 jewels to the cogwheels to original ETA-2452. On the movement was engraved Darwil 7010, 41 rubis Swiss made. Here it is a photo (sorry for the quality as I made it with my phone at the watchmaker and it was dark room).

Nice I got used to winding mine , but yeah, they used good movements mine hasent been serviced in I think 10 years.. and still its running only 20 secs to slow per day... Need to have it cleaned and oiled. I kind of like these Darwil watches, I think their cool, regardless of what their worth. I got an anker automatic at the cleaners, which I bought for 20 buks... its in amazing condition with date function. |

I learned how to safely remove the bottom and how to adjust the clock speed if neccesary I have checked the movement again and I need to correct the data: the right engavement was Darwil 7016. Now I need to find out what does it mean. The additional jewels seem quite funny as I don't see the reason why are placed on the cogwheels. Some balance...who knows... |

It migth be interesting for someone to see the inside of the 'modified' ETA-2452 movement. I have taken two macro snaps:
