Hello, I have an Illinois stemwind/keywind pocketwatch in what appears to be a gold case. It is an 18 size, extremely heavy, and well engraved. The markings on it consist of a multi-digit serial number, the number "18", and an eagle with wings outspread holding arrows/laurel leaves in it's talons. Does the eagle mark have a meaning or would I have to get this case tested by jeweler to determine fineness? Thanks, Dirik Lolkus |

I have not found anything that looks like that (though I'm not pocket watch expert by any stretch) The French used an eagle to denote .800 gold. Cases can be tested for gold, but typically a hidden part of it will need to be scratched to get a small sample. Zaf |

Thanks, Zaf...I had the case tested by a jeweler...and it's all 18k gold. Now all I have to do as avoid gettings dings in it! Dirik |

Then I would venture to say that it is a French hallmarked case. |

I have a watch that I cannot find information about. It is about an inch and a half in diameter on a "Y" shaped chain. Back has a four millimeter diamond. Dust cover say's "07026", J.LaForge, and Besangon. Only marks on works are R&A, I assume this stands for slow or fast, face also opens, marks on chain & watch 123. Looks to be gold. |
