I was digging through my basement today and I found a dusty leather box with "Longines The world's most honored watch" written in gold writing. The watch doesn't tick once per second, instead, the hand glides. I'd like to know approximately when the watch was made, what the value of it is, and other general facts.

On the face, it says (from top to bottom):

"LONGINES"
"Automatic" (written in cursive script)
(hands are here)
"OLYMPIAN"

On the back it says:

"*STAINLESS STEEL"
"14K GOLD CAP & LUG"
(space)
"REMOVE BEZEL TO USE 1280 WRENCH" (written upside down)

It's a late 1960s watch, value is probably around $300. You can write Longines for more information, they're generally responsive.

'60s eh? I emailed Longines yesterday and they told me they needed the serial # of the watch, where would that be?

The serial number would be on the movement inside the watch. Since this watch has a one-piece case (with a removable bezel) and it requires a special tool (and some expertise) to remove the crystal & crown to access the movement, I would recommend that this be done by a qualified watchmaker. The estimate by Zaf of a late 1960s production date is accurate and there is probably really no need for an exact date.

However, note that, since this watch has been sitting for many years, the oil lubricating the pivots in the movement has quite likely oxidized and dried up. Before using the watch it should be properly serviced. This involves disassembling the movement and thoroughly cleaning it and replacing the lubrication.

If the paperwork is filled, the movement serial number maybe on there...

The paperwork is still blank, unfortunately. I'm going to take it in for routine maintenance this week and have the serial written for me. The watch itself likely hasn't been touched since the early '70s since there are no real signs of wear on the exterior. It keeps time accurately, but I can't seem to change the date because the crown wont pull to a 3rd position.

It may not be a quickset date as found in more modern watches. Try going past midnight, watch the date change, then go back to 9:30 and then back to 12:00 and see if the date changes.

^ Thanks, it works. I just had to rotate it twice because it recognized AM and PM.
