I have a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust with serial number 1000441. It has a machined steel bezel and looks exactly like a current datejust (square cut batons and hands), though to adjust the date you have to wind through the 24 hours of each day.

According to the chart it dates from 1954 - did Rolex introduce the contemporary watch face as far back as that year or could the dating system be wrong??

The watch band looks like the modern one - three stainless blocks across but they are all hollow with springs inside to make the strap elastic.

Good question. The answer is no. The table is correct, but what Rolex did do (and the person that came up with this should be fired) is that they reused some serial numbers after they reached 1,000,000. Even though the Datejust has existed since the late 1940s the one you describe appears to be a 1960s model with a reused serial number. For such watches, Rolex stamped the quarter and year of production inside the case back. So you'll have something like III.64 for third quarter 1964. So you'll need to open it to find out. If the case back is domed you have a very early Datejust, possibly 1950s, if it is flat you have a more recent one which I suspect this is. Another option, is one of the numbers from the serial number has worn off from friction from the bracelet.

Thanks for the instant response - I'm getting used to the new software - it takes longer to arrive at the watches but then they come up much more quickly - did you know that you can see Hala on the web - the CNN site now does video streaming of the day's show CNNfn.com and look for the World Business page.

How do I distinguish between an original Rolex submariner and a duplicate one ? Does each watch have a unique serial no ? Is anything mentioned on the back case ?

There should be nothing on the case back. In between the lugs (you need totake the bracelet off to see this), you'll have a case reference number on one side and the serial # on the other.

I have a Rolex-La Joya, which I was told was from 1937, it is square with a small revolving second hand. As far as a serial number, there are 3 numbers on the back of the watch; the uppermost # is 24555, the next one down is 37386, and the final numer is 2536. The watch is 18k gold, any info would be appreciated.

LaJoya could possibly be a retailer as it was common for stores to co-brand in those days. It's probably made in 1936 and the 2536 is possible the reference number.

A picture would be very helpful.

Hi, I just purchased a brand new F serial # Rolex Submariner. Problem is, my watch doesn't seem to have the new Crystal Etching that Rolex started placing on thier watches. Any answers? Also, do you know if Rolex ever placed any numbers (serial/model) on their watch bracelets?

I do not know about the crystal, I don't know much about modern watches, however, the bracelet will have numbers stamped on them.

My wife and I just bought three new Rolexes in Bangkok from a reputable and authorized Rolex dealer with branches in Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok. One of these watches is a bleu Submariner Two Tone. After reading some articles on the web about fake submariners I examined my watch and found that there are no numbers engraved or stamped anywhere on the gold and steel oyster bracelet. Can you tell me if this is normal for a Rolex submariner oyster two tone bracelet.

Hello Jon, I am not very good with modern Rolex, but yes, I do believe all recent bracelets should have some sort of reference number stamped on it.

Hi! I just got what I am assuming is a mens vintage Wittnauer automatic wristwatch. The problem is that I am having trouble finding out any information about it on the internet. Is there a serial number somewhere on this watch? Where would I find it? And how much is it worth? If anyone out there can help I would be grateful

Wittnauer was the lower end brand name of Longines, typically sold in the USA. There are no serial # look up table that I am aware of. If you post a picture, I can try to guess.
