Hello I live in Uruguay, South America, and have two swiss vintage wristwatches which I would like to inquire about. The problem is that their brands are not well known as Movado, Patek Phillippe, Audemars, Rolex, etc. The brands are "White Star" and "Cauny", and I think these watches are from late 50´s or from the 60´s, I don´t know. They have the original swiss movement with "swiss made" inside, and serial number at the back of the case. They are round shaped, with gold caped bezel and a little second marker on the dial. The Cauny has a textured dial and the White Star has a black dial with 4 golden details around. I tried to inquire something about these brands in Internet, but I could not get any useful information. I would like to know if these kind of watches are rare or not, what has happened with their makers, if they still exist as a company, and if you can bring me please, a rough estimate of value. If you need pictures of these watches please tell me how can I insert them here because I don´t know how to. I would be very grateful for your help. Yours sincerely, Sergio Gindel e-mail: [email protected] |

Sergio: Both are generic Swiss brands, there are 100's of these, so not that rare. Given that the tops are gold plated and the backs are steel and the watches are time only (that is do not have complications) value is low. I'd say in the $75 - $100 range. Zaf |

Hi Sergio, Both of those brands are very popular here in Portugal, specially the Cauny, which is a watch that you can find everywhere. Nevertheless, there are people that only collect Cauny, and some models are sought after like the wrist alarm or the chronograph (usually Landeron or Valjoux calibers). I've been told that most Caunys use the unwanted parts from Omega and Tissot, but i have never compared the calibers. |

A simple Cauny in good condition varies between $30 and $50 (in a fleamarket) while the White Star is much cheaper, around $10. Chronographs go between $80 and $150, depending on the model and wrist alarms round the $120 figure. |
