Good afternoon,

It's my understanding* that -- likely in the mid '40s -- Rolex used Universal Geneve Cal. 281 Movements in their chronographs.

I would very much appreciate any related confirmation or information -- Rolex models and years, etc...
I've searched the net to no avail, and emailed Universal Geneve.

Thank you.

(* I read this in a description of a Universal Chronometer on sale on Finer Times (Ref r235) -- I emailed Richard, but to no avail.)

As far as I know, vintage Rolex have used Valjoux and Zenith ebauche, not all that finished beyond what you find in much less exepensive brands. I have not heard of the UG/Rolex connection before.

Vintage UG is a fine brand in its own right, it should't need Rolex to enhance its reputation.

I have a mid-'40s 14k (cal 281) UG chronometer that I'm having repaired at present.

Are you, by chance, aware of any original, not-refinished compur ,uni-compax or medio-compax dials for sale? (Is there perhaps one in that large British collection you're weeding through?)

I'm afraid I'm going to have to get this one refinished, in which case I will likely sell it (trying to set and keep collection 'rules').

Perhaps it's my growing disdain for the eBay watch crowd, but I suspect a Rolex pedigree might help sell it.

If I do get it refaced, do you have a feel which face design (compur, uni-compax or medio-compax) might garner the biggest demand? At present, it has an old redial with no model name, though the markings are like those I've seen on both compurs and uni-compax.

Thank you and best regards.
