I have an Elgin E-12 that looks like this one w/ luminous numerals on the dial and steel hands:

\hadfs1\root\users\jensen\My Pictures\watches\E-12 Standard Luminous Numerals.bmp (92.6 k)

I have also seen versions like this one with luminous exploding numerals and luminous hands:

\hadfs1\root\users\jensen\My Pictures\watches\E-12 Exploding Luminous Numerals.bmp (240.1 k)

As well as this version with embossed gold numerals and steel hands:

1) Can my dial and hands be original? I know dials can vary for a given model.

2) Logically, it seems like luminous numerals should be paired with luminous hands. That said a look at the Faber/Unger book on American Wristwatches and Shugart it appears that this is not always the case.

Any insight appreciated -- Steve

Sometimes, the luminous was applied to the tip of the hands, like on spade hands. So, yes it is possible that the luminous has fallen off since but yes generally speaking, luminous dials come with purpose made luminous hands.
