Just picked up another nice vintage Omega. This one is a US Army issued watch awarded to the winning team of a military basketball tournament held in Germany in 1946. This post details some of the mystery surrounding this particular Omega: http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=msg&goto=1878799&rid=6214#msg_1878799 Research shows that the dials on these did not age well, and this one is no exception, although it is better than average of the few I've seen. It came with the original band and buckle which is relatively rare. I purchased this one from a family member of the original owner, who gave me the name, rank and other information on the original owner. I'm going to place an inquiry with the US military public records office to document the provenance (with the permission of the original owner's family). Any suggestions as to where to research information on the military basketball tournament would be greatly appreciated. Hello, the U.S. Army Omegas are normally engraved "U.S. ARMY" at a fairly shallow depth on the case base. Is that lacking on this example? |

Zaf - It is lacking, but it is also possible that it was polished off prior to the "USAFE" engraving. USAFE = US Air Force in Europe, which was the name given to the US Army Air Corps (US Air Force after 1948) stationed in Germany from 1945 on. I may try to contact Omega to see if they have the serial numbers of the US Army production run. Take care, gatorcpa |
