I have an Omega 6B/159 without any case back markings on the outside. The inside of the case back shows it to be a correct Omega part. Were they ever issued without markings? Also it appears to have an aluminium case. Why would they do that? I cant believe it would be for weight saving!

Sounds like a replacement back to me...the aluminuim was either easier to source during the war than steel or was made like that for corrosion. I'm not clear on which one.

Thanks. Still strikes me as curious that anyone would replace the case back. My Dad bought the watch immediately post WW2, and I would have thought that even getting hold of a watch back would have been difficult, expensive and therefore pretty low on anyones list of things to do.

Could be a civilan watch to begin with. The case back RAF serial number was used to track inventory, so I don't see how it could go without them in a military application.
