I picked up a US Ord. Elgin military watch with a Cal.580 movement; however it was enclosed in a burgundy bakelite water-tight watch case with orange/yellow lenses.

Has anyone seen this type of watch/case configuration? Any history or knowledge of this style would be appreciated.

I can't say that I have! Looks kind of neat. Perhaps an early waterproofing attempt of some kind? Maybe look up the serial # of the movement to try to see when it was made.
