Founded in Besancon in the 19th century, Airain was one of suppliers of the French Air Force, notably providers of the Type 20 and Type 21 wrist chronographs with "fly-back" complication.

Generally speaking the Airain Type 20 was used by the French Army, typically in Helicopters (Aviation Legere de l'Armee de Terre), while it's sister watch, the Dodane was used by the French Air force. The watches are otherwise the same as they were both manufactured by Dodane.

It's unclear when the brand ceased to exist, most likely around 1990, and a few revival in the 2000's did not produce any watches that are considered collectible.
